Limping Dog Rescued From Red List At New Mexico Shelter Needs Surgery To Walk Without Pain

Meet Susan

The estimated 2-year-old Labrador retriever mix was found as a stray in New Mexico and brought to an overcrowded shelter. She was limping from an old injury and unfortunately tagged “red”, which meant she was at risk of euthanasia.

RezDawg Recue a foster-based rescue in Colorado, saw a post about the well-mannered pup and immediately stepped up to save her. They posted a plea for help from their supporters and a foster came forward just in time.

Sweet Susan was rescued and brought to an orthopedic veterinarian to be examined. The rescue told us, “It is unknown how her injury occurred or when.” The focus is on getting Susan the treatment she needs so she can walk and play without pain.

The vet recommended CBLO surgery to repair the cranial cruciate ligament injury in Susan’s knee. The surgery is costly but the only way to give Susan the best chance at regaining full mobility. The rescue reached out to Greater Good Charities’ Emergency Animql Medical fund for help.

The fund was created to help shelter pets like Susan get the medical care they needed and give them the second chance they deserve.

She will need a further 4-6 weeks of restricted activity and then slowly begin to increase her activity. Her current foster home will see her through recovery. Once she has fully recovered, there is no doubt that she will be quickly adopted as she is calm, sweet, and loves people. She is already spayed and current on all vaccinations.

She was started on pain medication and is waiting to have surgery.

Pets receiving critical care facilitated by an Emergency Animal Medical grant may not be eligible for adoption until they have completed their course of treatment. If you would like to inquire about adoption of a specific animal, we strongly encourage you to visit the shelter’s specific website first as that is often the most up to date place to learn about available pets and review the adoption policies and process. Check out RezDawg Rescue’s website to see all adoptable pets.
